Costermano

HISTORY OF COSTERMANO

costermanoThe name Costermano comes from the Latin “Costa Arimannarum”, remembering  the supremacy of the Longobards. Others tell, that the name derives from “Costa Armata” = places with a fortress. Her we can find “Palazzo Becelli“, built in the 15th. century, and quite nearby the villa there is situated the military cemetery for the fallen German soldiers during the II World War. In fifteen plats about 22.000 soldiers are laid. The cemetery offers the look of a garden and today it is administrated by “Volksbund Kassel“, a German community. In the nearness of the hamlet Albarè stands the palace “Villa Giuliari“, a Veronese noble villa, constructed in the 15th. century and continuously restored during the last centuries. Then there is to visit the pleasant “Contrada Pertica“, a group of rural houses and at least you have to see “Villa Torri“.

On the foot of Monte Baldo lies the little village Castion. Its name derives from the castle, which was constructed in this hamlet. Very interesting the Contrada San Verlo (or Verulo), a group of farmer houses. In the midst there is a little chapel, built in the 12th. century. In Castion, another disitrict of Costermano you can find a wonderful palace, named “Villa Pellegrini Cipolla“, one part in neoclassic style, the other part in Baroque, constructed  by plans of the architect Ignanzio Pellegrini (1715 – 1790), on ruins of an ancient building (14th. century). The main entrance has a wonderful iron portal; the central part of the park has wonderful marble statues, called “Four Seasons”. Inside  the owner permits to visit its villa, (Phone: 045 – 6200149) it keeps a lot of diverse halls, more than 55, with wonderful frescoes from the end of the 17th. century, telling about the way of life, the work men, the nobles, the huntsmen, the country life of those days. Quite nearby the hamlet Marciaga (altitude 300m), leaning out on a wonderful picturesque landscape with a miraculous view on  Lake Garda, called “Il golfo di Garda“. You can visit  the chapel of  Madonna del Soccorso, a simple  little church, built in Roman stile, during the 16th. century. Here  so they told was a vision of Vergin Maria, she was seen by some shepherds, and on every 8th. of December this chapel is visited by many believers, especially ill people, praying and asking for a speedy recovery.
